Massage Therapy & Its Magical Benefits!

Writer's picture: Jodie GreeneJodie Greene

Sooo, where do we begin when talking about massage therapy, what is it? why is it so beneficial, what should I expect when coming for a treatment at Sage Greene Holistic Therapy?

Lets start with the basics... What even is Massage?

Massage is a therapeutic practice that involves manipulating the soft tissues of the body to alleviate tension, stress, pain, and promote relaxation and overall well-being. It has been practiced for thousands of years in various cultures around the world.

During a massage session, Your trained therapist (In this case, ME, JODIE!) applies pressure, kneading, and rubbing techniques to different areas of the body, such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissues. These techniques can vary widely depending on the style of massage being performed and the specific needs of the individual receiving the massage.

The massages I offer here at Sage Greene are:

  • Swedish massage: This is one of the most popular types of massage, characterized by long, flowing strokes, kneading, and circular movements to relax muscles and improve circulation.

  • Aromatherapy massage:  This massage combines the benefits of massage therapy with the therapeutic properties of essential oils derived from plants. It's a holistic healing treatment that aims to promote physical, emotional, and mental well-being. During an aromatherapy massage session, Myself, your therapist incorporates the use of essential oils into the massage oil or lotion that is applied to the skin. These essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts that contain various aromatic compounds believed to have therapeutic effects. I will select specific essential oils based on the client's (YOUR) needs, preferences, and desired outcomes. Each essential oil has its own unique properties and benefits. This is chosen during consultation before the treatment begins.

  • Nurturing Pregnancy Massage: This massage, also known as prenatal massage, is a specialised form of massage therapy designed specifically to address the unique needs and concerns of pregnant women. It provides relief from the discomforts and challenges that can arise during pregnancy, such as back pain, swelling, fatigue, and stress. Pregnancy massage can only be performed by a trained massage therapist who has experience and knowledge in working with pregnant clients. They are skilled in adapting massage techniques to ensure the safety and comfort of both the mother and the baby. Focusing on the mothers positioning, using gentle pressure, focusing on safety, promoting overall wellbeing and focusing on each individual mamas needs.

The Good Stuff! Why is it soooo good and what are the benefits?

Well, Massage feels good for several reasons, both physiological and psychological. I'll list them all below:

  1. Release of Endorphins: Massage stimulates the release of endorphins, which are natural painkillers and mood elevators produced by the body. Endorphins help to reduce feelings of pain and promote a sense of well-being.

  2. Reduction of Stress Hormones: Massage can lower the levels of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline in the body. This leads to a relaxation response, reducing feelings of tension, anxiety, and stress, and promoting a sense of calm and relaxation.

  3. Improvement in Circulation: The manipulation of muscles and tissues during massage helps to improve blood circulation throughout the body. Better circulation means that oxygen and nutrients are delivered more efficiently to the muscles and organs, while metabolic waste products are removed more effectively. This increased circulation can result in feelings of warmth, relaxation, and rejuvenation.

  4. Relief of Muscle Tension and Pain: Massage techniques such as kneading, compression, and stretching help to relax tense muscles and release areas of muscular tension. This can alleviate feelings of discomfort, stiffness, and pain, promoting a sense of physical comfort and ease.

  5. Stimulation of Nerve Endings: Massage stimulates sensory nerve endings in the skin and muscles, which can create a pleasant sensation and reduce feelings of numbness or tingling

  6. Enhanced Mind-Body Connection: Massage encourages mindfulness and a deeper connection between the mind and body. By focusing on the physical sensations experienced during the massage, individuals can become more aware of their bodies and let go of mental distractions, leading to a sense of presence and relaxation.

Massage Treatments at Sage Greene! What should I expect when coming for a treatment, What should I wear and do I need to bring anything?

When coming for a massage treatment at Sage Greene, it's helpful to have an understanding of what to expect to ensure that you have a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here's what you can typically expect when coming for a massage treatment:

  • Consultation: I, Your therapist will conduct a brief consultation before the massage begins to discuss your goals for the session, any areas of discomfort or tension you'd like to address, and any preferences you have regarding pressure or massage techniques. This is an opportunity to communicate your needs and preferences to ensure that the massage is tailored to your individual needs. This is usually done online during your booking or 24hours before your appointment.

  • Privacy and Comfort: I will leave the room to allow you privacy to undress to your comfort level and lie down on the massage table. You'll be provided with towels and a blanket (very cosy) to drape over yourself for modesty. I will ensure that you are comfortably positioned on the table before re-entering the room. Also did I mention, We have a heated bed at Sage Greene! & our clients love it!

  • Massage Session: Will then begin, in regards to what massage & outcome you would like for your tailored session.

  • Communication: It's important to communicate openly with your therapist during the session. If you experience any discomfort, pain, or if you'd like adjustments to the pressure or technique, don't hesitate to speak up. I want you to have a positive experience, and your feedback helps ensure that the massage is tailored to your needs.

  • Relaxation: As the massage progresses, you'll likely begin to feel more relaxed and at ease. You may experience sensations of warmth, tension release, and overall well-being as your therapist works on your muscles and tissues. It's common to drift into a state of deep relaxation or even fall asleep during the session.

  • Aftercare: After the massage is complete, I will leave the room to allow you privacy to get dressed again. I will offer recommendations for self-care practices, such as drinking plenty of water, stretching, or applying heat or ice to specific areas. It's important to take time to rest and hydrate after your massage to maximize the benefits and avoid any potential soreness.

Overall, your massage treatment is a personalized experience focused on promoting relaxation, relieving tension, and enhancing overall well-being. By knowing what to expect and communicating openly with myself, your therapist, you can ensure that you have a comfortable and enjoyable massage experience tailored to your individual needs and preferences.

I hope this helps you understand and give you a little reassurance whenever you decide to book an appointment with myself at Sage Greene Holistic Therapy. I look forward to holding space for you and creating the tailored treatment you desire.

Much Love & Light Beautiful Souls,
